Construction Spending upside surprise

While most experts expected a decline, sonstruction spending rose in April by the largest amount since August, the Commerce Department said Monday.
The 0.8% increase followed a revised 0.4% increase in March.
Residential construction gained 0.6%. Non-residential construction increased 0.8%, and was up 2.5% compared with a year earlier.
Public construction fell 0.6%.

Construction Spending Inches Up in March

Construction spending rose in March for the first time in six months, according to the Commerce Department.
The March rate was up 0.3 percent, compared to February, but it was 11.1 percent below spending in March 2008. Analysts had predicted a 1.5 percent drop in spending compared to February.
